My Formula 5000
Englishman Brian Redman, the defending 1974 and 1975 Formula
5000 champion, has established one of the most outstanding records
of speed and reliability in the annuals of professional auto racing.
Since joining the Carl Haas/Jim Hall Lola Formula 5000 team in 1973,
Redman has recorded an incredible 41 first or second-place finishes in
46 heat and final races. If it were not for a contract conflict which
caused  Redman to miss two 1973 F/5000 events, the team would
have been consecutive titles to its credit, missing the crown by 14
points after scoring five victories. In 1975 Redman won the series
championship by a wide margin over runner-up Mario Andretti,
clinching the crown at Long Beach in the nine-race series’ seventh
event. In capturing his second straight title, Redman scored wins at
Pocono, Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio and Long Beach; second-place
finishes at Mosport and Road Atlanta and thirds at Laguna Seca and
Riverside. Redman campaigned a Chevron B24 in five of the 1972
events. Winning one, to finish fourth in the standings. In 1971, he won
two European F/ 5000 races in a McLaren M18 and placed fourth in
Europe’s “Can-Am,” the Interserie Championship, in a BRM P168.
Redman, who will defend his ‘75 title driving a Haas/Hall-entered, U.S.
Borax-sponsored Lola, began the 1976 season be sharing the
Daytona 24-Hour victory with Peter Gregg in a factory BMW. He also
competed in the ‘76 Tasman series driving a Formula 2 Chevron.
Redman began racing a Morris 1000 in 1959 and by 1967 had
advanced to professional racing with great success, winning the
Kyalami (South Africa) 9 Hours that year and again in 1971. In 1968,
he won the BOAC and Spa endurance races, repeating those victories
in 1969 along with Nurburgring, Austria and Watkins Glen World
Championship of Makes events as a member of the Porsche factory
team. In 1970, Redman was second at Watkins Glen and Daytona, but
was in the victory circle for the enduros at Spa, Austria and Targa
Florio. That same year he made a clean sweep of the South African
sports car championship by winning six events.
