My Formula 5000
McKitterick, owner of an auto and motorcycle performance accessory
manufacturing firm, entered three Formula 5000 Championship events
in 1975 driving the AME Aero Chevron B24/28. His best finish was 10th
at Long Beach, while he was not running but classified in 20th at
Laguna Seca and 13th at Riverside for 28th in the 1975 F/5000
standings. In 1974, McKitterick competed primarily on the amateur
circuit driving a Formula C racer to second in Southern Pacific Division
points and ninth at the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic.
Competing in pro races in 1972 and 1973, he did not record
successful seasons, racing in one Formula 5000 race each year and
two pro Super Vee events in 1972. His best performance in ‘73 was
second place in a National race, driving his F/5000 Eagle. The
previous year, his high points were at a Riverside National race where
he set a F/A lap record and won the event, and in a motorcycle moto-
cross where he placed second. Skeeter began his racing career at the
age of 13 driving go-karts, never finishing below third in any event he
entered. Five years later he was competing in a Porsche Speedster in
autocrosses and time trials, again never placing below third. He has
been racing in open-wheeled formula cars since 1968, the year he
won the Formula C championship in the Cal Club Region and Southern
Pacific Division, as well as the Formula Racing Association’s Formula 3
title. The next season, he worked as a development driver for an
experimental project involving a McLaren Formula B car powered by
an Alfa Romeo engine. He was a contender for the 1970 Formula B
championship title in a Tecno and his first outing in a big-bore sports
racer was the final Can-Am race of 1970 at Riverside where he drove
Len Terry’s car to a 14th place finish. A lack of funds kept him out of
competition in 1971.
