My Formula 5000
Sandy Shepard, a broadcasting engineering consultant, is back in the
U.S. after a year of racing in Europe to compete in the full 1972
Continental 5000 Championship series in a new Lola T300 powered by
a Smokey Yunick prepared Pontiac 302 engine. Seeking valuable
European racing experience, Shepard campaigned a Formula 3 car
last season, winning one event and finishing third in the overall point
standings. His SCCA racing career began in 1968 in a Lotus 51, but at
age 13 he was racing go-karts and winning all 48 races he entered
plus four drag racing motorcycle titles. In 1970 and 1969, Shepard
raced in the Formula Ford races.
