My Formula 5000
Pete Lovely is something of a legend in Sports Car Club of America
road racing as he embarks on his 19th season. Lovely won the SCCA
National Championship in the old F-Modified class back in 1955 with a
Cooper/Porsche. In 1957, Lovely won the first main event at Laguna
Seca in a two-liter Ferrari after a wheel-to-wheel battle with 2.5 liter
Ferrari driver John von Neumann. Lovely has driven almost every
model Lotus including the Seven, 11, 15, 18, 19, 22 and Cortina in
addition to his present 49b  Formula One car. Lovely has raced up
and down the West Coast and in most other parts of North America
during his years of SCCA professional and club racing. He has raced
in Europe several times and established a warm relationship with the
great Colin Chapman of Lotus. The result of this friendship is that
Lovely entered the SCCA Continental Championship series in 1969
with a 49b from the 1968 Gold Leaf Team Lotus. It is this car that
Lovely is campaigning again in 1971.
