Mel Andrus began racing in 1954 in jalopies and early model stock
cars in the Salt Lake City area, where he was champion in 1958 and
1962. Between 1959 and 1969 he won 68 feature modified stock car
events and never finished worse than third in the seasonal point
standings.  Andrus began sports car racing in 1969 and qualified 19th
for last year’s Riverside Continental Championship event. Retiring from
the Riverside race with mechanical problems, Andrus finished 16th in
the Edmonton Continental and 12th in the Sears Point series event.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 24 - A pre-race crash here today took the life
of Mel Andrus, 41, of Kearns, Utah. In a morning practice session,
Andrus’ Lola T142-Chevy went out of control and struck a retaining
wall on the outside of Riverside International Raceway’s turn one. The
high-speed impact ripped the car into several pieces. Andrus was
removed to Riverside Community Hospital where he succumbed to
head and chest injuries.
