My Formula 5000
John Benton selected open-wheel formula cars as his mode of
racing transportation when he began racing four years ago starting
in Formula F early in 1972 on SCCA’s club racing circuit. Benton
graduated to professional racing and Formula Super Vee in 1973,
failing to finish the two pro races entered.  Competing  in National
events, Benton placed fourth in his Division’s I standings and 12th at
the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic “runoffs.” In 1974,
Benton entered the Formula 5000 Championship series, starting
four races with his best finish llth at Mid-Ohio in a Lola T330. In
1975, Benton campaigned the Formula Magazine Lola T332 in six
series events, his best finishes 14th at both MidOhio and Road
Atlanta. Benton holds a bachelor of arts degree from Yale and an
MA from England’s Cambridge University. His non-racing occupation
is educational publishing, the Encyclopedia Britanica Educational
Corp., and he is also publisher of Formula Magazine.
