My Formula 5000
In his first year of Formula 5000 competition(1975), Jackie Oliver
proved to be the successful driver he has been in other series. He
started seven of the nine events in the Universal Oil Products/Don
Nichols Shadow DN6, placing sixth or better in all but one of those
races for a fourth-place finish in the final standings. The year before,
the elusive SCCA Canadian-American Challenge Cup title was his after
four consecutive victories and one ninth-place finish in a Shadow.
Starting seven Can-Ams in 1973, Jackie finished four for ninth place in
the final points while in 1972 he either finished a race in fourth or
better or didn’t finish at all to place eighth in series points. In 1971, he
started eight races, his best finish a third, with problems again keeping
him from high finishes in other events. As a Shadow team member,
Oliver also campaigned on the GP circuit in 1973 his best effort third at
the Canadian Grand Prix. In 1970 Oliver placed fifth in the Can-Am
standings, finishing second in all three races he Started, driving the
Ti22. He began racing in 1961 at Brands Hatch in a Mini Minor. He has
a first-rate reputation in sports car endurance races with victories at
LeMans, Spa, Monza, Daytona and Sebring. He has also competed on
the Lotus and BRM Formula 1 teams and in ‘72 branched out his
American racing career by joining the NASCAR Grand National circuit
for several events.
