Gary Wilson started only one Formula 5000 race in 1975, at Laguna
Seca, and was classified in 26th position with mechanical failure after
finishing ninth in his heat race. Wilson, who plans to compete in the
entire 1976 Formula 5000 series behind the wheel of a Lola T332,
missed last year’s series due to a shop fire which destroyed the
majority of his racing equipment. Wilson entered Can-Am competition
in 1968 and was always a points earner, his best placing in the
Challenge Cup standings a 12th in 1970 at the wheel of a Lola T163.
In 1973. He entered only one Can-Am, the Road America finale, and
placed fifth in his Sting GW-1. For his performance in the series in
1969, Wilson was invited to the Mt. Fuji 200 in Japan where he placed
fourth. In the 1972 series, he earned points in three events driving a
McLaren M8E which was fitted with a turbocharged engine for the ‘73
series in which he started two events, placing seventh and ninth.
Wilson, a former rancher, began his career in 1960, competing in
amateur events through 1966, primarily in production sports cars.
