Bob Earl, a consistent competitor in the SCCA’s Formula Ford ranks,
capturing the 1973 F/F National Championship. He began racing in
1971 and quickly established himself as a talented road racer. In 1974.
He finished second in Formula F in the Southern Pacific Division and
was a pre-race favorite to repeat his championship at the Champion
Spark Plug Road Racing Classic, the SCCA’s annual National
championship-deciding event, when an accident dropped him from the
finisher’s list. Earl’s initial Formula 5000 start was in the 1975 Atlanta
Grand Prix where he finished 10th in the qualifying heat race but
mechanical problems caused him to fail to finish the feature. At the
Long Beach Grand Prix, Earl captured ninth in his qualifying heat and
eighth in the feature race driving the T.P. Racing Lola T330.
