Although Koops only began racing with the Sports Car Club of America
in 1971, his experience in the sports began on drag strips some 17
years ago when he competed in gas coupes and small fuel dragsters.
He turned to oval racing several years later, racing super modified and
early model Stock cars–he still campaigns stocks in the Denver area.
Always interested in SCCA’s Trans-Am and Can-Am racing, Koops
prepared a B production Corvette, received his SCCA license and
began his road racing career in early 1971. By season’s end, he had
won first place in the Midwest Division Inter-Regional championship.
Koops competed in SCCA’s National Championship events in 1972
and ‘73. He entered Formula 5000 competition in 1974 but without
great success. In 1975, Koops ran selected F/5000 events driving the
Solazure IV Ltd. Lola T330, placing 16th at Pocono and Road America.
A mechanic by profession, Koops enjoys skiing, flying and painting in
addition to auto racing.
