My Formula 5000
Al Unser, one of the top stars of the USAC Championship Trail, also
proved to be a top star in the SCCA/ USAC Formula 5000
championship series last year. Driving on the Vel’s Parnelli Jones
Viceroy team with Mario Andretti, Unser started eight of the nine
events, winning at Road Atlanta, placing second on five occasions and
once in sixth to finish third in the championship point standings.
Unser’s USAC career has been highlighted by two Indianapolis 500
victories in 1970 and 1971 (he was second at Indy in 1967 and 1972)
and captured the USAC National championship in 1970 (second 1969,
third 1968). Al was also USAC dirt track champ in 1973 after placing
second in the year end standings in 1972. Prior to 1975, he made
occasional appearances in SCCA professional competition driving in
both the United States Road Racing Championship and the Canadian-
American Challenge Cup series. Al, the youngest of the famed racing
Unser family, started racing super modified stock cars in 1957 at the
age of 18, won the Pikes Peak hill climb in 1964 and 1965 and has
recorded a total of 28 USAC championship trail victories. Unser comes
to The Glen fresh from a come from-behind victory at the Schaefer
500 at Pocono.
